iPad Information
Acceptable Use
Salem Community High School is pleased to provide students and staff a wide variety of technology resources. Our school encourages students and staff to use the resources to promote educational excellence. The Network/Internet Acceptable Use Policy provides general guidance concerning the use of school computers and other electronic devices and provides examples of prohibited uses. Students, parents, and school staff who have questions about whether a particular activity is prohibited are encouraged to contact a school administrator. These rules apply to all school computers, all school-provided electronic devices wherever used, all uses of school servers, and Internet access and networks regardless of how they are accessed.
Damage
Indemnity of School for Loss or Damage: If the Equipment is damaged due to negligence or loss, the School shall have the option of requiring the Student to repair the Equipment to a state of good working order or to reimburse the School for the replacement cost of said Equipment.
Equipment Warranty and Insurance: The Equipment is insured for theft and some accidental damages with the School's property insurance carrier under the specific guidelines of those policies. The Student must notify the School immediately if any claims need to be made in those instances. Students are required to keep Equipment in the provided cases at all times as part of the legal agreement between insurance carrier and the School.
Any attempt by the Student to repair Equipment on their own will void warranty and insurance coverage. This shall result in the Student being responsible for any and all charges related to the repair or replacement of the Equipment.
Damage to Equipment due to gross negligence or willful misconduct are not covered by warranty or insurance. The Student will be held responsible for all charges related to the repair or replacement of the Equipment.
Any theft or accidental damage to the iPad must be reported immediately to the Technology Department. Failure to do so may result in the denial of the claim with the insurance company and the Student will then be responsible for any and all costs for repairing or replacing the Equipment. Accidental damage includes, but is not limited to the following. iPad frame, cracked or blemished screens, spill damage, damage caused by drops or falls, and fire damage. Repair claims submitted for accidental damage carry a $100.00 deductible. This deductible shall the responsibility of the Student.
NOTIFICATION PROCEDURE
At school - Notify your teacher immediately
At school sponsored events (such as away games) - Notify your sponsor and at your first opportunity, email technology@salemhigh.com to report the damage or theft
At home or away from school - Email technology@salemhigh.com with information and/or call the high school (618)548-0727 ext. 1012 and leave a voicemail message with the details
Cost
What will it cost?
There will be a partnership fee of $50 per year. All students will have the option to complete 10 partnership hours or pay the partnership fee. Partnership hours will be completed in service to the community through approved programs.
The cost of the iPad includes: the iPad, iPad case and sleeve, iPad charger, software applications (apps) which have been selected by SCHS for note-taking and class specific requests.
What is the Student iPad Protection Agreement?
The school district has purchased property insurance to cover the iPad the student will receive; this includes theft. The policy is in effect on a yearly basis. Students who damage, or are a victim of theft of the iPad, will be required to pay the $100.00 deductible in order to receive a replacement. If the replacement fee is not paid, the student will not receive a replacement iPad.
Care
The Equipment may only be used in a careful and proper manner. The Student shall keep the Equipment in good operating condition allowing for reasonable wear and tear. The Student shall immediately notify the Technology Department if the Equipment is not in good operating condition or is in need of repair. The Student shall be financially responsible for repairs due to negligence.
Care and Maintenance of the iPad
- Do not attempt to gain access to the internal electronics or repair your iPad. If your iPad fails to work or is damaged, report the problem to the Technology Department staff as soon as possible. iPad repair/replacement options will be determined by the Technology Department staff. You may be issued a temporary iPad or other materials until your iPad is working properly or replaced.
- Never leave an iPad unattended. When not in your personal possession, the iPad should be in a secure, locked environment. Unattended iPads will be collected and stored in the school’s main office.
- Never expose an iPad to long-term temperature extremes or direct sunlight. An automobile is not a good place to store an iPad.
- iPads do not respond well to liquids. Avoid applying liquids to the iPad. Do not use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPad. Use of unapproved cleaners may remove the protective film covering the face of the iPad. Clean with a microfiber cloth.
- While the iPad is scratch resistant, the iPad will scratch. Avoid using any sharp object(s) on the iPad.
- Your iPad comes with a case and a sleeve. The role of the sleeve is to protect the iPad while the iPad is being transported. The case is to protect the iPad when in use. It is best practice to leave the iPad in its case.
- Avoid placing weight on the iPad.
- Never throw or slide an iPad.
- Your iPad comes with ports for charging and other accessories. Care must be exercised when plugging and unplugging accessories. Student-issued iPad accessories are the responsibility of the student.
- Each iPad has the ability to be remotely located. Modifying, disabling or attempting to disable the locator is a violation of the acceptable use policy and grounds for disciplinary action.
- Each iPad has a unique identification number and at no time should the numbers or labels be modified or removed.
- Do not lend your iPad to another person. Each iPad is assigned to an individual and the responsibility for the care of the iPad solely rests with that individual.
- The iPad is an electronic device and care must be exercised when handling the iPad. Never throw a book bag that contains an iPad. Never place an iPad in a book bag that contains food, liquids, heavy, or sharp objects.
- The iPad is designed for daily use; therefore, each iPad must be charged and ready for use each school day. iPads should be charged at home.
Partnership Hours
The Salem Community High School technology fee for the school year 2024-2025 is set at $50.00. In order to receive a waiver for this fee a student may elect to perform 10 hours of community service work under the direction of an authorized partnership agency.
Guidelines:
- The parent/guardian and the student are responsible for contacting the partner agency to arrange participation in services that count toward the successful completion of the 10 hours.

Upon completion of the required hours, this agreement must be completed and signed by the partnership agency authorized director, the student, and the parent/guardian. - The signed agreement should be submitted to the Salem Community High School Main Office.
