Basic Rules
  • The bird must cross the net before a player can attempt to play it.
  • In single, the first serve is always on the right side of the court.
  • If during a rally the bird hits a player or their clothing it is a fault.
  • It is a fault to serve the bird with the racquet head above the hips.
  • In order to win a game a player must have a two-point advantage over their opponent.
  • If the bird lands on the line it is considered in.
  • The server must serve the bird to the diagonal court.
  • A player cannot touch the net during play or it is a violation.
  • If the receiving team touches the net during play it will be a point for the server.
  • If the server hits the bird out-of-bounds it is a side-out.
  • If a player goes out of bounds to play the bird it is a legal play.
  • A serve landing on the short line is a point.
  • The doubles game consists of 15 points.
  • The singles game consists of 11 points.
  • When the score is odd the serve is taken from the left court and when the score is even it is taken from the right court.

 

Definitions
  • Ace--A good service that the receiver is unable to touch with the racquet.
  • Backhand--Hitting the bird on the left side of the body if a player is right handed.
  • Drop shot--This is a shot hit from the mid-court or back, which barely clears the net and falls   into the front of the opponents court.
  • Drive--A hard hit shot just over the net.
  • Clear--To hit the bird on a high arc behind the opponent.
  • Face--The hitting surface of the racquet.
  • Fault--Any violation of the rules.
  • Forehand--Hitting the bird on the right side of the body if the player is right handed.
  • Kill--A hard hit bird that is impossible to return.
  • Lob--The bird is hit forcefully high into the air and lands in the opponents’ backcourt.
  • Rally--A continuous stroking of the bird back and forth across the net.
  • Smash--This is a hard hit shot which angles sharply downward into the opponents court.
